PhD Studentships Polymer Packaging of High Power Semiconductors Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and the Institute of Polymer Technology
*Reference: DCW161106*
Two PhD Research Studentships are available as part of a major research project to develop ultra-high power thyristor switches for applications in electric power transmission and distribution systems. The project is jointly funded by the UK Department of Trade and Industry and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and is in collaboration with Dynex, Areva T&D UK Ltd., Semefab (Scotland) Ltd. Loughborough University will
focus on novel low cost polymer based non-hermetic packaging technologies for the thyristors.
It is anticipated that one student will focus on package and process design/optimisation and modelling, whilst the second will focus on materials selection, polymer adhesion, environmental testing and failure analysis, but
this will depend upon the specific skills and experience of the two candidates selected.
The successful candidates will be based within either the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering or the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering. Funding is available for 3 years commencing on 1 January 2007. For UK/EU students the Research Studentship provides a tax free stipend of ~£15000 p.a. plus payment of the Home/EU tuition fee. For overseas students the additional fees may be covered by the
School, subject to the candidate holding excellent bachelor/master level qualifications. Candidates are expected to hold a good first degree (First-class, Upper Second-class or equivalent) in Materials, Mechanical or
Manufacturing Engineering, Physics or a related subject. Applicants with previous industrial experience would be particularly welcome.
