[Canada] Graduate Research Assistantship (PhD) in Urban Micrometeorology, The University of British Columbia

| | |

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, is seeking a graduate student at the PhD level in urban climatology/micrometeorology. The position is part of a collaborative research network on ‘Environmental Prediction in Canadian Cities’ (EPiCC) funded by the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS). The successful PhD candidate will receive three years of full-time support at a yearly minimum rate of CAD 18300 with a possibility to extend to 4 years through internal funding.

The research will involve eddy covariance measurements and modeling of energy, water and carbon exchange between urban environments and the atmosphere. It will focus on temporal dynamics of fluxes with special respect to anthropogenic activities, urban vegetation and irrigation. Existing rural and suburban tower sites and upcoming mobile measurements will allow addressing urban-rural differences as well as intra-urban variability.

The successful candidate will enter a Graduate Program in Atmospheric Science or in Geography at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Anticipated start is September 2007 or January 2008. Domestic and international students can expect a waiver of tuition.

Required qualifications: an M.Sc. or a comparable degree in physical geography, atmospheric science, environmental physics, biology or a related field and a background in surface-atmosphere interactions and statistical analysis. Field experience and high-level programming skills are desired. The candidate must be eligible to be admitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The University of British Columbia is committed to employment equity.

Further information on application procedures may be obtained from Andreas Christen, phone: 604-822-6620, andreas.christen@ubc.ca. The closing date for applications is March 30, 2007.
