The Traditional Fulbright Scholarship Program was established worldwide in 1946 and in Cyprus in 1962. The Fulbright Scholarship Program is a world renowned, merit-based scholarship program that aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. The title of ‘Fulbright Scholar’ carries tremendous prestige that continues to open doors for a lifetime. Fulbright scholars have been extraordinarily active and successful in the world: 39 have won Nobel prizes; 60 have won Pulitzer prizes; 22 have received MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Awards; 14 have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. highest honor. The ranks of past Fulbright Scholars, internationally, include former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, economist Milton Friedman, author John Updike and musician Aaron Copeland. In Cyprus, Cypriot alumni include leading personalities in the political, social, cultural, economic and scientific life of the island.
